Wolf Strap Commission

Description

Thanks to :iconkyra-wolf: for modeling this for me. This headdress was created as a commission. We shot this photo at my grandmother's house, where I completely missed the potential for little red riding hood jokes. (Because I'm ReD, and I'm short so I'm little, and I'm at Grammy's houes with..the wolf? Shhh. I'm tired.)

After wearing my personal wolf out in public considerably over the last year, I started to collect a list of people who were interested in having me create headdresses for them. Last fall, I received an offer for a small wolf taken in Canada as part population control methods. The wolf had been dragged through the woods and as a result, the hair on the neck became thin and wooly, making him unsuitable for taxidermy and the cost of tanning would outweigh what they expected to sell him for. Once I had enough money saved up, I sent him down to a tannery here in PA and waited anxiously for him to return.

I did all the shaping over Lupercalia with an herbal mixture blessed on Mabon, Yule, and Imbolc. This headdress is constructed how I wanted to create mine; he has leather loops on the top legskins so he can be worn bikini style (as pictured) or tied to each arm. The lower legskins tie to each leg and larger loops fit around the hips for a belt, like a proper wolf strap should. Though the headdress has carnelian-accented ties beneath the chin, they're not needed to support the wolf so there is no awkward pressure on the neck. He can be worn headdress style (as featured) or with the face pulled down as a mask.

The result is an extremely well-balanced headdress. He is designed as a non-traditional dance costume. Kyra and I have both tested him and we were able to run, jump, and dance without any problems. He is going to a client that is going to use him as part of her ceremonial ware and in traditional dancing.

I will accept comments and questions, but hate will be ignored and blocked. If you disagree with the use of animal parts, I respect your decision and ask that you respect mine by not commenting here. You can use your energy to instead make a donation to the Wolf Sanctuary of PA, where you can make a real difference in the lives of animals that could use the support, not ones that have been dead for years.
